It recognizes that adults learning to speak Spanish will learn differently than children, and we concur with that logic. The program endeavors to explain the language in a way which makes sense to English-speakers. The Fluenz® approach is based on getting you to understand how to structure relevant sentences as you teach yourself Spanish rather than relying on the association of words and images to learn how to say words. Fluenz® builds steadily from useful structures like questions and commands and useful vocabulary (related to restaurants, transportation, directions, etc.) to more complex situations – a good approach to learning to speak Spanish. However, it is difficult for us to see the justification for the significantly higher price compared to the program reviewed above.

The Rosetta Stone® approach is based on an immersive environment to teach yourself Spanish, and a sequence of learning which they have thought through quite well. They use combinations of words and images in a manner which is designed to teach yourself Spanish by assisting with memorization. They do not use translation or grammar rules in learning to speak Spanish, which we found a little strange. You will hear, write and pronounce a lot of words. Their voice recognition tool needs a bit of work, although it has improved. The whole program, which they refer to as adaptive immersion(TM), feeds you many words and phrases, along with images. You will learn many words and expand your vocabulary. You won’t get much help on tenses and conjugation, which we feel is an integral part of learning to speak Spanish to conversational level. Their thesis is that an adult in learning to speak Spanish will do so in the same manner as an infant, which we do not agree with, as an adult is already thinking in their native language, whereas an infant has no language until they absorb their first one! You will expand your vocabulary significantly with this program – and that is part of learning to speak Spanish. Pricing is not competitive at all – this is an expensive course for what you get.

Learning Conversational Spanish

So what is conversational Spanish anyway?

Let’s answer that with a question. Why are you learning Spanish? Are you learning for school or college, where you will have to pass a test, and where you will be judged on your knowledge of rules, and tenses, and comprehension? Or are you learning because you want to be able to hold a normal conversation with a native -speaker of Spanish, or enjoy your vacation more in a Spanish-speaking country? And those questions answer the question posed, I believe.

For many people, conversational Spanish is the goal, and courses with a focus on real-life situations will be a better choice than courses which focus on rules and grammar and verbs. Don’t get me wrong! You’ll still need to learn some of this – but it is not the primary focus in a conversational course, and once you have reached a certain level in your conversation skills, then the rules and grammar come to you as part of your conversations. If you ever want to Speak Spanish Fluently, you’ll need to start with mastering sentence structure!

The courses we recommend focus on conversational skills, and we believe this is the best way to learn – unless you have a big Spanish test tomorrow of course!

Should I Learn “Spanish” Spanish or “Latin American” Spanish?

I get asked this question a lot. And I believe that more is made of this than need be, to be perfectly honest.

I grew up in Ireland, where English is the main language, and one of the two official languages (Irish being the other). Ireland is part of the British Isles, and the closest countries are England, Scotland and Wales. All of these countries use English, and there are no different versions of English for these countries in the official sense.

However, if you go to Manchester (England), Glasgow (Scotland), or Cardiff (Wales), or Cork (Ireland) – all of which are within one hour’s flight from each other, I challenge you to fully understand what a native of any of these cities is saying, even though they are supposedly speaking the same English as you. It’s down to the pronunciation. Then travel to London (the home of English), and catch a cab to the airport with a cockney cab driver. Good luck understanding him!!

Spanish, in terms of regional pronunciation differences, is actually more consistent than English. Now there are some circumstances where a word or phrase means something totally different in different countries. For the most part though, it is simply not a big issue, although it gets a lot of discussion – more than it deserves in my opinion!

The biggest potential difference is in the conjugation of vosotros. This is not used in Latin America, but it is used in Spain. So simply choose whether you want to study this. Even without it, you’ll pick it up in your first couple of deep conversations with a Spaniard.

Immersion – The Importance for Learning Fast

Immersion is the absolute best was to learn a new language – period!

There is nothing like living in a country where the language you are learning is spoken as the native language. Just listening, and trying to participate in conversations will speed up the process at an amazing rate. But that’s not feasible in most cases.

So what can you do to simulate that? There are a number of things you can try:

Check to see if there is an immigrant community near you
See if there are any language channels on TV
Rent sub-titled movies, and watch them in the foreign language, following along with the English sub-titles
Try to get away for weekends to a place where the language is spoken (the nearest big city – where there might be an immigrant community)
Find restaurants or stores near you where native speakers work – and try ordering in their language (you will pay them a big compliment and may strike up a friendship!

Now that you are on your way to mastering a new language – here are the places where you can find out about visas for travel. Remember that you will progress at an amazing rate if you can simulate immersion in the language, but being there, where it is spoken as the native tongue is the best way. So plan your next vacation now! Or start learning the language before your next business trip. Or transfer to a university in another country for a term if you’re a student. Of enter into an exchange program for a week, or a month. There are many ways to get to visit where the language are learning is spoken natively.

Don’t forget to check out the visa situation well in advance and make sure your passport is up to date. Don’t be surprised and disappointed. Remember that you usually need 90 days remaining on your passport before you’ll be allowed to enter many countries. That is because tourist visas are usually for 90 days and they don’t want your passport to expire while you are there (nor do you, for that matter!!).

Their Byki® tool is very interesting. It’s memory algorithm technology is claimed to tailor learning based on the user’s strengths and weaknesses. Interesting stuff!! Transparent Languages have been around a long time, and unlike some of the other older competitors, they have spent the time updating their courses to take advantage of new technologies. We applaud them for that, as they are not treating their product as a cash-cow, instead they are continually investing to make it better. No question, this is a comprehensive course, with lots or resources. And because immersion is so important, we liked their 30 virtual reality scenarios. Overall, a strong course!

The Fluenz®program is based on sessions led by an on-screen tutor, so it very much tries to simulate the classroom approach. It recognizes that adults learn differently than children, and we concur with that logic. The program endeavors to explain the language in a way which makes sense to English-speakers. The Fluenz®approach is based on getting learners to understand how to structure relevant sentences rather than relying on the association of words and images to learn how to say words. Fluenz® builds steadily from useful structures like questions and commands and useful vocabulary (related to restaurants, transportation, directions, etc.) to more complex situations. The classroom approach is not for everybody, although we do like this program. However, it is difficult for us to see the justification for the significantly higher price compared to the program reviewed above.

Review Highlights: Classroom approach – very much a teacher / student approach which is not for everybody. The screen tutor is clearly an expert Focus on sentence structure – the program really focuses on sentence structure as opposed to individual words, which we like Cultural nuances – they spend a lot of time going into cultural nuances as a way of explaining things like sentence structure. Transparent’s approach is to provide you with a full range of multi-media tools – programs, online resources, mp3 files, audio lessons, virtual environments, immersion videos. Their view is that everybody learns differently, and they are trying to cover all the bases. Honestly, we found it a little bewildering, but you certainly have choices! Their Byki® tool is very interesting. It’s memory algorithm technology is claimed to tailor learning based on the user’s strengths and weaknesses. Interesting stuff!! Transparent Languages have been around a long time, and unlike some of the other older competitors, they have spent the time updating their courses to take advantage of new technologies. We applaud them for that, as they are not treating their product as a cash-cow, instead they are continually investing to make it better. No question, this is a comprehensive learn to speak Chinese course, with lots or resources. And because immersion is so important, we liked their 30 virtual reality scenarios. Overall, a strong course!

Learn to speak Italian to conversational level in as little as eight weeks. We present objective reviews on the best learn to speak Italian courses. The important factors to watch out for are the tools which aid learning. The program endeavors to explain the language in a way which makes sense to English-speakers. The Fluenz® approach is based on getting learners to understand how to structure relevant sentences rather than relying on the association of words and images to learn how to say words. Fluenz® builds steadily from useful structures like questions and commands and useful vocabulary (related to restaurants, transportation, directions, etc.) to more complex learning italian situations. The classroom approach is not for everybody, although we do like this program. However, it is difficult for us to see the justification for the significantly higher price compared to the learn to speak Italian program reviewed above.

This is the best value Spanish program, because it incorporates all of the expected verb, vocabulary, and conjugation tools, but surpasses the others with superior simulated immersion tools and lifetime access to forums and learning lounges exclusively for customers. And it represents excellent value, especially with limited time special pricing currently available. Best solution! Best value! Rocket doesn’t do the same big brand advertising as their competitors, and they pass the savings on to you!	Fluenz is a great program, which is based around a mock classroom setting. It endeavors to explain the language in a way which makes sense to English-speakers. The classroom approach is not for everybody, although we do like this program. Sentence structure is explored in great depth, and is useful for learning some of the technicalities of Spanish. However, it is difficult for us to see the justification for the significantly higher price compared to some other Spanish programs for what you get.	The Rosetta Stone thesis is that an adult can learn Spanish the same as an infant. We do not agree with this approach, as an adult is already thinking in their native language, whereas an infant has no language until they absorb their first one! You will expand your vocabulary significantly with this program but for conversational skills it falls short. Voice recognition tools need some work. Pricing is not competitive – this is an expensive Spanish course for what you get.

The Fluenz® Fast Spanish program is based on sessions led by an on-screen tutor, so it very much tries to simulate the classroom approach. It recognizes that adults learn differently than children, and we concur with that logic. The program endeavors to explain the language in a way which makes sense to English-speakers. The Fluenz® approach is based on getting learners to understand how to structure relevant sentences rather than relying on the association of words and images to learn how to say words. Fluenz® builds steadily from useful structures like questions and commands and useful vocabulary (related to restaurants, transportation, directions, etc.) to more complex situations. The classroom approach is not for everybody, although we do like this program. However, it is difficult for us to see the justification for the significantly higher price compared to the program reviewed above.

Review Highlights: Classroom approach – very much a teacher / student approach which is not for everybody. The screen tutor is clearly an expert Focus on sentence structure – the program really focuses on sentence structure as opposed to individual words, which we like Cultural nuances – they spend a lot of time going into cultural nuances as a way of explaining things like sentence structure. Informative, but at the risk of getting side-tracked from the main goal of getting conversational in the language Supplemental podcasts – Fluenz® offers supplemental podcasts. Their main program is very much CD / DVD based, so perhaps this is their way of moving towards a more interactive solution Challenging workouts – they certainly do dig deeply into analysis of sentences during each session, perhaps a little too much Fluenz® navigator(TM) – assists with cultural and travel information. Rosetta Stone Fast Spanish 3 (L1-5)®		Our Rating:(3.5 / 5)

The Rosetta Stone® Fast Spanish approach is based on an immersive environment, and a sequence of learning which they have thought through quite well. They use combinations of words and images in a manner which is designed to assist with memorization. They do not use translation or grammar rules, which we found a little strange. You will hear, write and pronounce a lot of words. Their voice recognition tool needs a bit of work, although it has improved. The whole program, which they refer to as adaptive immersion(TM), feeds you many words and phrases, along with images. You will learn many words and expand your vocabulary. You won’t get much help on tenses and conjugation, which we feel is an integral part of learning any language to conversational level. Their thesis is that an adult can learn a language in the same manner as an infant, which we do not agree with, as an adult is already thinking in their native language, whereas an infant has no language until they absorb their first one! You will expand your vocabulary significantly with this program. Pricing is not competitive at all – this is an expensive course for what you get.
