What is the best way to learn how to speak Spanish fast or speak Spanish fluently?
To learn any language there are three components:
- Vocabulary
- Verbs and tenses
- Sentence structure and conversational skills
The best way to learn how to speak Spanish fast is through immersion. This involves living the language, by locating yourself is a Spanish community and living your life through Spanish for a month or two. However, this is simply not practical for most of us! But, let’s analyze what that involves to determine if there is another method which comes a close second. Through immersion, you:
- quickly develop a vocabulary
- quickly become familiar with common verbs and tenses
- are rapidly exposed to conversational situations so that you can understand sentence structure, colloquialisms and adjective conventions
- are constantly practicing and being forced to think in the Spanish language

The alternatives to moving to a Spanish community include Spanish language classes, a Spanish tutor, or a Spanish language home study program, either online or CD / DVD-based.
I do not recommend Spanish classes, or a Spanish tutor. First, they are expensive. Second, while you might develop a vocabulary and master verbs and tenses, these approaches fall down with respect to immersion. You are only practicing conversation while at the classes, perhaps once or twice a week. This will not get you there! If you can have a live-in tutor, who can force you to try to speak Spanish daily, and who will correct you constantly, then you have a chance, but this is impractical for most of us.
The piece of the puzzle which is missing is the simulated immersion. Do not let anybody minimize this component. I attended weekly Spanish classes for three months, and found that each week I had forgotten most of what was covered the previous week. I developed a vocabulary and I could conjugate verbs in all of the tenses. However, I was totally unprepared for conversational Spanish – to the point of embarrassment. Perhaps classes and tutors will work for some people – I am not one of those, and I strongly suspect that I am in the majority.

This leaves us with Spanish language programs. These are home study courses, so they do require some commitment and self-motivation. However, if you can spare an hour or two a day, you can be conversational in eight short weeks. Indeed, you will grasp basic concepts and be able to structure simple sentences in seven days or so. But only if you apply yourself to the course daily. Skip a day, and it puts you back two or three days. There is no substitute for practice in a simulated immersion environment, and if any program makes this promise – avoid it. It will not work!
